  1. THE economic outlook may be grim, but Australians are still splurging on gadgets, spending a record $2.4 billion on digital products in the first half of the year. LCD and plasma television attracted the most dollars. Australians spent $888 million on LCD screens alone, but other big sellers included game consoles, digital cameras and MP3 players, according to the Canon Digital Lifestyle Index. The sales figures were the highest recorded for the first half of the year. Canon consumer imaging products group marketing manager Darren Ryan said Australians could shell out up to $6 billion on digital technology this year, up from $5 billion in 2007. "I believe the trend can be attributed to the importance of digital technology in our lives," Mr Ryan said. Although technology spending increased, 10 of the 11 gadgets fell in price, including plasma TVs and digital cameras. Standard DVD players and single-function inkjet printers fell in popularity, and were replaced by games consoles, DVD recorders and multifunction printers, the report said.
