Lying dad jailed after baby left disabled ( 57 Views )

A MAN who caused his 10-week-old daughter severe and permanent injuries when he shook her has been jailed for six years. The 38-year-old man, who cannot be named, was found guilty of grievous bodily harm after a three-day trial in the Brisbane District Court, where he was sentenced today. The court was told the child - who is now six - suffered a variety of serious injuries as a result of being severely shaken by her father in February 2003 at their home at Kallangur, north of Brisbane. Prosecutor Vicky Loury said the young girl now has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, is blind in both eyes, is unable to move or walk independently and has to be fed through a gastric tube. "This (level of offence) was only a fraction below manslaughter,'' Ms Loury said. The court was told the father has shown no remorse about his actions and that he told a number of lies about the incident to police. He has still never revealed exactly what happened to cause the injuries. "It might well be that you are not prepared to face it yourself,'' Judge Michael Shanahan told the court. "One can only assume that you simply lost your temper on that night and shook the child.'' The sentence was delayed until today because the man had swallowed poison he smuggled into court when the verdict was handed down after the trial in May. He spent a number of days recovering in hospital. Judge Shanahan today sentenced the man to six years jail. He has already served 132 days in pre-sentence custody.
