Help installing Ultima 90 ( 2 Views )

1. I have an Ultima90 and this is my first time installing a socket 775 heatsink. I'm following their instructions. I put the pillars in the multi-backplate and put the o-rings on them to hold them in place. When I go to put the bracket mounts I can't tighten them enough. There are gaps between the flat part and the mobo. The pillars went through the holes in the mobo and they stick out a little over the surface of the mobo but the holes in the bracket mounts are smaller and they just sit on top of the pillars. The heatsink is not tight enough. I can still twist it even when the mounting bracket is tightened all the way. What am I doing wrong? Mobo is an Abit IP35PRO.

3. That is exactly how I am doing it. It almost seems like I need washers on the bottom side of the mobo. Or the pillars are too long. I am using the correct ones. The AM2 ones are bigger.
   
   Another thing is the anti-vibration strips had the clear plastic pulled off them already so they are not sticky and I can't use them. Is that going to vibrate now or is not that big of a deal?

5. i dont get it you must be using the wrong parts, make sure you are using the intel and not the amd parts

   They are in two separate bags. The AMD parts are bigger and would make the problem worse. I don't get it either. This is my first time installing a heatsink onto a 775 socket. I'm about to just slap on a stock cooler on just so I can use my PC.

7. You didn't remove the plastic parts from the backplate did you? I attached my Ultima 90 without any troubles, so this doesn't look familiar to me. And the fact that you can twist the heatsink a little bit is normal I guess (also goes for it's bigger brother the Ultra Extreme 120).

   I didn't remove the plastic parts. Did your pillars go through the holes in the mobo? Are your bracket mounts sitting on the mobo or is there space like I have?

   I just looked into in my case and it seems to me that there is a small space between the motherboard and the bracket (where the screws are ofcourse). So the brackets are "hovering" a little over the motherboard. I can't see if it is as dramatic as in your picture. What I do know is that both my brackets fit very well and that I can't wiggle the brackets.
   Maybe my mainboard is a little thicker than yours?

    My brackets fit very well also. It just seems like there isn't enough pressure by the heating onto the cpu. I would like to go another 1mm down. There is 'some' friction when I turn the heatsink, but I wanted the heatsink to be pretty solid on there so I can't turn it when it's clamped down. Maybe I'm paranoid and I should just test it out and see what the temps are.
    
    This is my first experience with this socket so who knows maybe it's fine. My mobo does seem pretty thin.
