so i have $200ish to buy an Intel dual core CPU + mobo ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. i was thinking about E21xx or E2200 because i heard they are Core 2 Duo chips in disguise that can overclock very well, but i am not sure which mobo will be the best to unlock their overclocking potential
    suggestion, guys?

  2. ABIT IP35-E or GIGABYTE D3SL and an E2160 or E2180 should fit in that budget.

Just know that the p35 boards don't allow for RAID or SLI/Crossfire so if you need them look elsewhere.

These boards both will most likely need bios updates when you receive them because of double boot issues, but they seem to be the best choices for people on a budget who want to overclock.

My next build is going to be the D3SL and E2160.

  3. I'm in the same boat, though if Quad prices come down by next year, I might just pay more. Would an E4300 or E4400 not be within your budget? The D3SL can be had for less than $100, and new in box E4300/4400s can be had on eBay for under or around $100 as well.

Just a bit of clarification: P35 boards do allow Crossfire as long as they have dual PCIe x16 slots (still no SLI though). However, one of the graphics cards will only run at x4 or possibly even x1 depending on how the board is wired. Also, some P35 boards do have RAID capabilities if they are equipped with the ICH9R southbridge.

  5. Wouldn't you need to upgrade your memory as well? Might want to throw that into the budget.

ps: I have a GIGABYTE P35-DS3L, love it. Very stable and relatively cheap.

  6. realistically, how much is the difference between E21xx's and E4xxx's performances clock for clock?

A lot of people "only" get about 3Ghz overclocks with either those chips. Granted some do 100% overclocks. (from 1.8Ghz to 3.6Ghz)

But sometimes you get what you pay for. ie: a chip that was rejected at a higher speed bins.

Or sometimes you get a lucky one that just had a bad piece of cache, but can hit mad overclocks at low voltages!

There's not much difference between the 2. Most apps were designed to fit in 512Kb or less of cache. And then the other big majority of apps like gaming, encoding, etc.. are constantly running through the system ram, so the cache difference doesn't make much difference.

    Celeron's (based on Core2) have 512Kb - single core
    Pentium (2xxx) have 1Mb
    Core 2 D (4xxx & 6300, 6400) have 2Mb
    Core 2 D (6xxx) have 4mb

  8. also, how do i make sure that the CPU i buy will have M0 stepping? (assuming i'm buying a new chip from an online retailer and not a used one on ebay)

    (selim, Cuba)

  9. Look for retailers that list the stepping and/or sSpec/batch #s.

ie @ eWiz they have an e2180 (retail boxed, OOS now) marked as M0 stepping, as well as an sSpec of SLA8Y, which on Intel's processor finder shows up as (surprisingly so) an M0 e2180.

Sorry yea I was talking in terms of the boards I mentioned

  11. I bought an E6300 on the boards for $65 and an Intel Bad Axe 2 for $89.99 from Newegg.
