1. i just gave my htpc a makeover and i am sorting out the storage now. at the moment the system in my sig has 2 wd500 gig drives in single disk and one wd250 gig fr the os. i am about to buy three wd 1tb drives and will carry one of the 500's over for OS duty. i want a hardware raid 5 for movie storage while the hd-dvd/bluray drive and OS will remain onboard.
   
   i am looking for a 4 port hardware raid controller that is pcie1. i do not have any pci slots and have been forced to use the pcie1 as it is the only open slot. i have looked, over the past ten or so days, through all f the etailers i know, every manufacturers site i can think of and dug around here in the hope of finding a card to fit my needs. i did come across some great info about cutting a notch in the pcie1 slot to fit an x4 card but i only want to follow that route if there are no other options.

3. I have 3 of those cards, love 'em. I don't think they are hardware based though, still use the system cpu. I have 2 in my media center, both running RAID 5. 4x500gb WD on each for the same use you want. I have never, ever had any slow down or problems. I'm running an AMD 4200x2 on an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe with 2 gigs of ram. The system has been stable like a rock for over a year now. I got to test the raid when I had a hd fall out, the software told which drive it was, and when I installed everything I had marked the cables and drives, 10 drives in a case can get confusing. Turned out that the SATA cable was bad, not the drive, but I was still up and running with that setup.
   
   So anyway, it may not be a full hardware setup, but I really like them.

5. i looked at that one long and hard but i still would like hardware. i also looked at 3ware, adaptec and accusys,and promise. all of them had 4 port hardware cards but they were pcie4. i may just try cutting a notch in the slot just for fun.

   I've thought about cutting a PCIe x1 slot to make it so I could still use my PCIe x4 RAID card even with reduced bandwidth. I can't bring myself to do it so I'll just shove that card into another box instead.

   why u want hardware based raid if you plan to squeeze it into 1x slot? you won't really get more performance out of it the only thing true hardware card would give you is less cpu utilization? is ur cpu constantly pegged? can't spare few cycles for raid parity?

   Pure hardware RAID solutions have a few other advantages. They tend to be more flexible and are more full featured solutions than their onboard counterparts.

9. its not performance anxiety... just piece of mind. the same reason i picked up the 8600gts. i like knowing the array is isolated from the OS. my cpu handles hd fine from what i have watched but i like the fact that the rest of the resources are not being used if they dont need to be. though i still run xp (the hd 2600 works :( ) i have home prem. sittin in my closet waiting for my hdd's.

    OK i wasn't talking about crappy onboard raid or even windows software raid, I meant using rocketraid card mentioned in previous posts.

    I don't think you know how the high point rocketraid cards work, it's hardware based raid but it doesn't do its own parity calculations, it uses the system's cpu to do that (using driver calls so that's why it's referred to as software raid and not pure hardware). That said it is completely separate from your os, you can put your controller and hard drives in a diff computer, different os etc and the raid array will be intact.

11. I was going to say, I've moved my cards from ATi chipsets to NF4 chipsets, from XP to Vista and back again and all I ever do is install the drivers for the card when I install the os, everything is there and fine.
