Is it worth putting Artic silver 5 on the stock cooler to allow better overclocking?

I wouldn't bother unless your having heat issues. If you going to really try to overclock you might as well put an after-market heat sink on while your at it.

Yeah.... thats [H]ard alright. If they are running into the 80s at stock clock im not going to get much of an OC out of it. Its going to be pushign a decent size monitor so id like to get every FPS I can get. I dont see anythign aftermarket yet... guess the card is just to new at the moment.

there is no question you should AS5 it.
i would ceramique it. miniscule difference for perfect application technique, but as5 requires perfect application and burn in and cooling.
im a ceramique guy now. I never knew why they made ceramique in the face of as5 being thermally slightly better, but using it... youll get more consistent great temps right off the first goop and go.
always always always regoop your stuff. temps drop dramatically... north south, whatver you can.

Isn't the newer cards better off with a more pastey stuff than AS5?
(meltem, Bahamas)
ceramique is smooth, AS5 gets pastey after a few heating/coolings
i never heard of either type being better in terms of paste vs goop
(ismail, Guam)
I can see thermal pads on the memory so I would assume the only thing I could really use paste on is the GPU but seeing as the temps are so high anyways its not worth it. I need to look into aftermarket cooling but I cant find anything. It hits mid to upper 80s with a slight OC and running 725/900 will run for a little while but eventually it gets to hot. This card seems to respond to overclocks better then the Nvidias ive played with. Even small jumps showed nice improvements in the games.

the difference can be huge.
sometimes the goop is misapplied. i have dropped 8 degrees C from a northbridge that was like 52 now 44. higher the temp the more pronounced the effect.
(burak, Maldives)
I need to find some ceramique and try that. I'll wait and see if anyone else does this first and see how their temps go. In the end I am sure this guy is gonna want it to be silent so aftermarket cooling will be a must.
(MELTEM, Japan)
ceramique rox. at high temps it can be sometimes a 1 degree difference after the as5 gets burned in.
nothing to be noteworthy. I find that the ceramique beats as5 often as as5 is really picky about application. also, initial temps on ceramique are better. just the month later temps on as5 can be that 1 C cooler, nothing big if you are below 60C which I always am
