Small + useful + simple web apps to install on my little sisters website? ( 2 Views )

  1. If you are lazy or otherwise don't feel like reading the backstory, skip down to the line below.

    Well, I tend to purchase things for my family that they probably don't really want or need but that I think they'll find useful. Generally speaking this involves technology of some sort.

    This year I've decided to purchase my little sister a domain name. Her name (frst+last.com) was available and I wish I had been able to purchase my full name, but my name (Kevin Mitchell) is too popular unfortunatly and it's long gone.

    Anyway, I think that in this world it's a good idea to have a quality domain name to represent yourself, especially if you are in the arts or english (or tech) world.

    Anyway, the point of this thread is this:

    ==========================================

    I bought my sister a domain name for xmas but she doesn't really need her own hosting plan, and I odn't really want to pay for one, so I'm going to just be hosting everything with my basic 1and1 account. I am looking for possibly useful web applications that I could provide her with in order to make her website useful.

    For instance, she is into art and is going to be traveling in europe so I figure I'd install "gallery2" for her. I just started using it for my own photos (gallery.shoelessone.com) and it's really easy to use and has a lot of features, and other than the install (which I'll use) doesn't require anything fancy.

    I'll also be having her setup a blog through her gmail (blogspot) account so when she travels next summer she can use "blog.herdomain.com" instead of whatever else she would use.

    So, does anybody have any other good ideas for other web apps that might be cool or otherwise useful for her?

    edit: I have PHP, MySQL, and that's about it as far as web technologies (no ASP, JSP, etc) just to give you an idea. Again, simple, small, low bandwidth would be great.

    Thanks!

  2. Seems like a good question to be asked of her, not us :)

    If she is anything like my sister, she wont see the point of all this when her myspace page is already so kickass! Well, kickass! as in barely loadable and hardly readable :)

    That said, maybe look at setting up some small portal/cms software like Joomla! or something. Tone it down a bit, add some useful modules (I think one exists for Gallery2) like a contact form, guestbook, blog, link section, etc. Then get a pretty template and tie it all together.
