upgrade my p4 northwood ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. I now have a dell gx270 optiplex with a p4 2.4 ghz northwood cpu with a 800 fsb and 512 k L2 cache. also it is socket 478. i want to replace it with a Intel Pentium 4 3.0E Prescott 3.0GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket 478. i am looking to purchas one from new egg and in the reveiws one cust stated he had upgraded from a 2.8 ghz northwood. the only difference between the northwood and the prescott that i can see is the size of the L2 cache. he said that he did notice a significant improvment in performance. Any thoughts.

  2. You are not going to see a huge difference. What are you doing with your comp? Gaming? Maybe few fps.

Get yourself a new mobo and a cheap current CPU. I wouldn't upgrade your computer. It's just a waste to spend money on such a old socket.

  3. that cpu was one one the best overclockers out there dell probably wont let you overclock it though.
you will probably notice more difference if you just reinstall everything fresh and get rid of all the accumulated crap. (and the crap dell put on there) and save your money for a new PC later.
