O/C Timings Question ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. I pushed my pc2-533 up a little bit to 337 and CPUz gives me the results below. My question concerns the timings. They should be 5-5-5-15, I didn't change them and it looks like the moved up by themselves. Should I pull them back down to the 5-5-5-15 or will that hurt them?

  2. If your timings are set to AUTO then lock them in at CL5-5-5-15. Use about 2.15 volts for your DDR2 memory and you should be able to overclock it higher and maintain those timings without hurting anything.

This is a good review of how memory scales with more voltage and how timings effect the ability of memory to overclock.

That processor with some decent memory on a board with an Intel chipset like the P965 or P35 should have no trouble running reliably, 24/7 at 500 x 7 = 3500 MHz.

  3. Thanks for the reply. I'll take a look. Thats a bit more agressive of an overclock that I was going to go for. I am thinking about getting some 800 mhz memory and getting it up to 3 ghz. I'm still on stock cooling. Will I need to upgrade the cooler?

  4. I changed it and didn't up the voltage, Its running, temps went went up 2 degrees. Will not upping the voltage cause problems as long as its stable?

  5. Voltage helps maintain stability. If the system is stable, then there isn't a need to increase the voltage as that just increases heat.

As for upgrading the cooler, if your temps ( load temps ) are below 65°C or 60°C you're fine. If not, you'll want some more cooling power because over that you're going to start to affect stability and longevity.

Oh, and it should be "DDR2-533" or "PC2-4200" for "PC2-533" and "DDR2-800" or "PC2-6400" for "800 MHz memory"

Just nitpicking because it's a slight ocd thing of mine.

  6. Thanks, I'll keep an eye on it. I am thinking about getting the Zalman 9700 and some PC2-6400. I'm not sure if I really need to upgrade my ram or not.
