Sites that suck! ( 5 Views )
-
Hello-
I would like some professional advice. What things should you never put on a good website? What makes a website suck? Am I correct.. Bevel buttons and animated gifs should never be used unless you absolutly have to? They were cool like 10 years ago.. but today it just bad design?
Please chime in? Whats your opinion?
Thanks!
(ayhan, Israel)
Anyone mentioned Comic Sans?
And little annoying animations of fruit goods :nanaman:
(didem, Virgin Islands, British)
Agreed. Most splash pages are evil. However, on something like a personal site, it's there just to humor me, so I don't care. :D
Business sites, however, are different, and I stay far away from them there.

Exactly!
I was only referring to these splash pages. I do agree with you though compuwhiz7, sometimes a splash is appropriate, only when done to a good standard :)

Sorry I have to agree with FrozenToast and say that splash pages suck. They are usually just an over photoshoped image with an enter here link. I don't think I've ever seen a splash page that was worth having. Especially the ones that give you all the "requirements" to view their site and then an option to bypass their long and useless flash intro.
Just get right to your content, if its any good then people will stay. I bet a lot of people lose a majority of their traffic with splash pages and pointless flash intros. They are really not needed especially if you are a real estate company or something similar.
Sorry, had to vent ... bad clients today. :)

Splash pages (some of you may disagree, so let me be more specific).
Splash page images that look like they have been produced using a tutorial. Crystals and so forth *shudders

that is probably the MOST annoying thing ever.
Also I usually a leave a site that resizes my browser window. I have a huge freaking monitor running at 1920X1200 ... I don't need you to launch your site full screen at my resolution for your 800X600 site. If I see a horizontal scrollbar I'll stretch my own window ... thanks.

agrees that black bg with lime text is over used and ugly

what exactly is wrong with that? If your searching for something and the content is from over 10 years ago and the person who owns the site still leaves it on the net then a big thank you should go to that person, to often good resources are lost (web archive..thank god) because people pull the plug on them. ;)
bevels and drop shadows still have a purpose, they have just progressed since the mid 90's.
poor design really sucks, and so do the leet graphic sites that give horizontal scrollies because there graphics dont fit in at 1024x768... my biggest pet hate however is websites that play with your mouse cursor.. thank god there are not many of these left out there.

Heres the most annoying thing I know:
Not putting the goddamn bloody price on the web site!
That is SO BLOODY STUPID. It's an excellent way to make a customer pissed off: make her search a lot for something that ISNT THERE, and that EVERY SINGLE PROSPECT WANTS TO KNOW. I bet 75% of the people that search for the price will just give up in frustration and go right to your competitor, and the other 25% that contact you for a "quote" (which in 99% of cases is just picked from a price list anyway) does at that point have a negative impression of you because they have a negative experience on your site.
If you don't place the price on your web site, make sure you have a bloody good reason for it, and state VERY CLEARLY that the customer has to request a quote to recieve pricing info.

:agree: Yes... in-site under construction pages are very annoying; I was referring more to ones that cover the entire site. For example, at the moment I have a domain that points to a valid server account, but there's nothing there. I put up an under construction page there, just to cover the whole site.
:)

nice point on the under construction pages - unprofessional - Don't post it if it's not ready.
Mystery meat navigation is a huge peave for me. I'm talking about site with icons for navigation and no text navigation.

You could, but I'd be forced to disagree. :D I find under construction pages very useful, particularly for those pet projects of mine that only get five minutes of attenion on Saturday evenings. ;)

Agreed date stamps are very useful and important for some types of web documentation as it puts the information in perspective. I also agree that in many cases I'm quite pleased that some really old pages still exist. I'd rather have to access a really old page written say in the HTML3.0 days than not have access to the data at all (e.g. legacy hardware documentation).

<shudder> Ooo, how I hate it! I think I saw a website dedicated to destroying Comic Sans. The thing is, I noticed that websites that use it are more likely to also feature many of the other sucky devices listed in this thread. Not all, mind you, I'm not making a sweeping generalization here.

too plain, or to much color on a website *yuck*.
But I agree, gifs also,... never use animations...
The WORST thing you could do is, Black bg with big blue/lime green text *seen so many websites, have had nightmares*
(Adem, Mexico)
more animated gifs than toes and fingers unless its really cool but i mean like the animated dividers and i dont like the geocities or freewebs layouts ive seen em like 10 million times

I'll add to times new roman to include comic sans ;)
(mithat yılmaz, British Indian Ocean Territory)
Big text and tiny text.
Times New Roman.
Default link colors.
Not enough white space (buffering).
Big drop shadows.
Ugly colors combinations.
Too many colors.
Black background with blue text (or similar hard to read varieties).
Broken images.
Side scrolling.
(şeyma, United States Minor Outlying Islands)
yeah.. I have seen quite a bit of that lately. I actually use very smooth small bevels now and then. Just wanted some opinions.
Thanks!
(ata, Netherlands)
well bevels can be used well, as long as they are very very small bevels, I am talking like 1 pixel...
I always laugh when I see people make these giant buttons with huge bevels.
(ahmet, Norfolk Island)
Popup adverts
Large banner adverts (bigger than the standard 468x60)
Poor spelling and grammar
(okan, Thailand)
Ah, yes, especially the poor spelling and grammar. :agree:
Another pet peeve of mine is inconsistency, both in visuals and in content. ;)
(THERY, Tonga)
broken images
(salih, Rwanda)
Scrolling/dancing text.
Those floating arrows that follow your cursor.
Hideous wallpaper backgrounds.

My additions that make for bad sites:
Too many font types used in text and graphics.
Graphics that have a larger file size than necessary simply because they weren't optimized.
Text that is hard to read because there is not enough contrast between text color and background color.
Flash splash pages that delay my access to a site's content (I really hate these).
(efsane, Iran, Islamic Republic of)
(funda, Tajikistan)
And breathe Mattias.
I totally agree with you though, that does piss me off too!
