What's cold boot? ( 2 Views )

1. I've came across to this term whilst reading a review of a motherboard. Could you tell me what is it exactly?

2. It's starting the PC from off, rather than re-starting from on (either in OS or via the reset switch on the case)... if that makes sense! :)

4. yup, cold boot means when all components inside the case are at room temperature. This can take a very long time for some components, espically when there is no air flow inside the case.

   It doesn't have a damn thing to do with the tempurature of any of the components.
   It's the same a hard boot, and it just means starting the comp from the off position, rather than rebooting (Aka warm boot).

   Cold boot - boot from power off state.
   Warm boot - boot from power on state.

8. Cold boot means that the computer was completely off and then was turned on.
   
   It is known as a problem with boards that won't just do a normal RE-START when overclocked, and instead will go off completely, and then ON again = COLD BOOT.

9. In regards to the Gigabyte DS3 and S3 boards it refers to an issue where when powering the machine completely off and pressing the power button to perform a cold boot, all the OCing setting are lost in the bios and the board boots with default settings.
