will the 8800 will be a good dx10 card when everything's all said and done? ( 1 Views )

I'm sort of in a dilemma here. I've been reading a lot lately about the 8800 series and it seems that it is basically a really amazing dx9 card. Everyone says that if you're buying this card for dx10, then you should wait because by the time they get the drivers right for dx10 support, the second wave of cards will come out from nvidia. Though, the real question here is, when they do get the drivers right for dx10 support, do you guys think the 8800s will perform well in dx10 based games? Does Call of Juarez foreshadow how 8800s will perform in true dx10 games. I know it's all speculation now, but I just need that one comment that will make me take the plunge and not regret my purchase.
Should I get the eVGA 8800GTS 320MB for $330 canadian or just get an x1950 or 7900 based video card? If I do buy the 8800GTS, how long do you guys think it will last in terms of showing its age? I really want at least 2 years out of this card. I only game at 1280x1024. Also, do you guys think that the 8800GTS 640MB, which is roughly $100 more (compared to 320mb) here in Canada be worth it? I read that DX10 games will require a lot of memory, but would it matter if you're playing at 1280x1024.
Thanks.

IMO, at 1280x1024, you'l easily get 2 years out of a 320MB 8800GTS.
If, by some chance, the next generation of video cards is that revolutionary, you might have to turn down FSAA to 4x or 2x to get the framrates you want at that resolution.

i have a 8800GTS 320 but iam swapping it out for a 640mb cuz i got a 24inch monitor
anyways i upgraded from a x1950pro and the diffrence is huge
don't get anything else lower than a 8800GTS 320mb is fine if you play on a 20inch monitor or smaller but if you have 24inch monitor you need 640mb
the image quality is the best than any card ive ever used
it use to be ATI had the best image quality well .. not anymore

I think you would be fine with the 8800 series. No issues at all..

You'll always be waiting for the promised land.
Buy one of the 640 GTS cards and SLI another if things get tough, there are good rebates currently at mwave and newegg.

Well, it will be faster than the radeon 2900.

New Nvidia cards won't be out until November if they follow their normal schedule. So Nvidia think the 8800 is good enough for DX10 until then.

Yep.

I would go with the 640 if you are thinking long term, so your not screwed if you end up with a higher res monitor eventualy.

Yes and no. There will be games where the HD 2900XT is faster and games where the 8800GTS 320 and 640MB cards are faster. There is however the issues of heat, power draw and image quality. None of which match the 8800GTS. (Though image quality has improved from what I've been reading.)

We don'y really know as their isn't much Direct X 10 software out there to test with is there? Eventually faster DX10 cards will be coming down the pipeline. This type of thing always happens and there will always be something better in six months to a year from now. The key is to get something you will be happy with now and hopefully for awhile. If you aren't ready to drop $600 every six months, then get what you need and be happy with it until you can afford or are willing to afford a new card.

I've got an 8800GTS 320MB and I've got to say grab the 640MB if you are going to play on anything larger than 19" or 20". It's as simple as that. Since you only game at 1280x1024 I'd say grab either one, but be aware that the 640MB card will have longer staying power if you aren't the type to upgrade often.

Remember that DX10 is SUPPOSED to be EASIER to run than dx9. Also, games are SUPPOSED to start utilizing dual core more so that's less strain on the gpu. What am I saying? That maybe, just maybe now, the 8800 series has more legs than we think. At any rate, get the fastest card yuo can afford and smile b/c games are dang nice at high res.

Do you have any evidence to support this claim?

This thread doesn't need to be turned into another ATI vs. NVIDIA thread. We have plenty of those in other threads.

yeah stop it now. no reason to get into it when it's been beaten straight down into the ground already. tired of it already. buy whatever you think is best.

I was going to reply, but I'd rather follow Dan's suggestion.

Just buy what you think is the best for you now. if you wait till this or wait for that you'll never buy any hardware. I have a 640 MB GTS that I just love :D
The new DirectX 10 patch for Company of Heroes makes me love this card even more !!! :o
(ilken, Honduras)
I'm going to go ahead and agree with everyone here in saying the 8800 will perform fine for a while to come. Yeah, you can always wait for the next gen - but that's a whole other issue. :p
I'd get the GTS 640 just in case you ever bump up to a higher res, and then in the future you can always pop a second one in once games get a bit rough to play at good frame rates.
(sercan, Namibia)
I have to disagree with adding another card later to bump up the framerates. Typicaly by the time you will start needing SLI, a new single card will be faster.
Happened when I bought into VooDoo 2 (V3 came out and it was faster than 2 V2s!)
Then I bought a 7800GT. Although I figured that I would never SLI, now that I want an upgrade I'm not even considering getting a second 7800GT at the moment since I would be better off with the 8800GTS 640
I would imagine by the time your 8800 GTS needs an upgrade you would be better off with a new single card solution. If your going to SLI do it now and enjoy the crazy speeds!

Thanks for the replies guys. I just bought the eVGA 8800GTS 320MB

Sorry I thought this was a thread about DX10 cards?...As there are no DX10 games(just hacked/patched games).... I just wanted to know who had the DX10 info and could prove there claims. I wasn't trying to start/hijack this thread and make it another Nvidia vs ATI thread. But the fact is that no one knows which card will be best at DX10 at this point and if you say you do you're just full of BS...

Sorry I'm not adding to the topic in anyway, but I just wanted to say that I just did the same thing and it's supposed to arrive tomorrow.
Especially since I'm coming from a 9500 Pro (God bless it), I needed to let that out. :D
