Wii Continues To Dominate ( 2 Views )

Coming as a surprise to no one, Nintendo continues to be the leader of the next gen pack selling 360k consoles. The Xbox 360 sold just under 175k while the PS3 sold only 82k.
Quote:
The Wii topped the console category, logging 360,000 sales. Sony's PlayStation 2 was second for console sales with 194,000 units. Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold 174,000 units, while the PlayStation 3 sold only 82,000.

Even Russy (Reverend Run's Boy) had to get himself one. LoL.

OMG stop the fuking presses. People actually buy video games to play games?
I thought we bought consoles to circle jerk over the internal hardware?
(özge, Nicaragua)
Combine this with the fact that Nintendo has been making money on the Wii from day 1 and has several first party games on the top 10 list, everything is looking up for Nintendo.
Its nice to actually have a completely competative console market. Its nice when 1 console doesn't totally dominate the market like the PS2 did last gen.

I never get tired of seeing the Wii do well after the trashing Nintendo took before it came out. Hell, I might actually buy one of these and I'm not much into console gaming...

After the Gamcube, Nintendo was due for SOMETHING.
Man that was an embarrassment.

not as big of an embarassment of virtual boy :D

In the era of 3, 4, and soon 5 dollar a gallon gas prices, the cost of items like this will be the only thing of importance. Not fairly unimportant graphics, and that could be a good thing.

I wonder when you can just go into the store and pick one up and there will still be 5+ wiis sitting there..... maybe for another year? now Mass produce your nintendo wii!!!! nintendo...:D

Yeah I agree with that. I would have bought one months ago if that were the case. I haven't been able to go into a store and see even 1 sitting on the shelf and when they do have the Wii's, you have to stand in line and hope they pass you a ticket to buy one of the 3 they just got shipped in. How on earth do they sell so many when they never have any at any stores?
(fatih, Samoa)
what i'd like to see is how many games are being sold for each console. console sales tell part of the story, but game sales are also an important part.

I took me a few months to get a Wii because I had a hard time finding it. I have to admit its probably the best console out there right now. Ever since I got my Wii, I've barely touched my 360 and my PC. I just finished Snowpeak Ruins in Zelda... and I have a good portion of the minigames finished in Rayman.

I actually got to see my price = sales theory in action the other day (consoles are selling according to price right now Wii-360-PS3 = $249-$399-$599):
I am at my local GameStop, the lady in front of me says "How much is the new PlayStation?" the guy behind the counter tells her. She about shit "WHAT!?!?!" After a second of incoherent babbling she says..."[i]How about Xbox 360?[/I" He tells her the price of the core / premium / elite...she didn't even bother to ask the difference between them and she says "What else is there?".... Dude says The Nintendo Wii is only $249.99. Lady says "I'll take one" then the guy says....I can put you on the list, we are out of stock...blah blah blah....the lady, now kinda pissed said "How much were the Xbox 360s again?" He tells her...she buys a 360 and leaves.
Hardcore gamers buy the system we want, we don't care about price (well, you know what I mean) but a lot of sales are being made by parents that are buying a next-gen console for junior. All they really care about is price and that is why we see the trend of:
#1 Console = $249
#2 Console = $399
#3 Console = $599

Me too, my friends made fun of me for liking it and said they will never get one, and they ended up getting one before I did. I knew the remote was special, I just thought things would have gone more towards the Wii360 combo, I never thought the wii would double the xbox sales. Damn!
Its so popular used games are even scarce.

I don't know about that. Cheaper price didn't save the Dreamcast when the PS2 came out.

Great for the Wii. XBOX 360 will pick-up as soon as Halo 3 is released.
The PS3 from what I understand doesn't have enough enticing games to really attract buyers. I suppose Blue-Ray will entice some buyers as it's priced low for blue ray players, but there's not a big market for that stuff. I don't know anyone whose bought a blue-ray player. I think Sony would have been better off having the blue-ray as an add-on component with an easy to remove drive and price the PS3 below the Xbox 360.
One great thing about the Wii is that you don't need Hi-Def to enjoy it.

i've had a chance to play a number of wii games and while not all of them are appealing to me, the way the wiimote handles madden 07 is nothing short of remarkable...
unfortunately, everyone i know who owns a wii is a hopeless super smash brothers ultra nerd and wouldn't even consider a game of football with me. hell, when i ask 'em over for a beer they decline, citing reasons of WoW :p
i wont be buying one until metroid for the wii revolutionizes the way we play FPS and tiger woods golf scores 9+/10. there are alot of programming tricks still unlearned as far as the wiimote/nunchuk goes and i do hold out alot of hope for the console, but it's not there yet.
as a hardware enthusiast, xbox360 and ps3 don't interest me at all. gears of war, burnout, blue ray discs...meh. the 'best' game out for either system(IMO), halo, is impossible for me play. with my gigantic hands, trying to use a little analog nub stick for aiming is an effort in futility.
wasd/mouse look FTW, wiimote runner up and crappy nubstick controllers FTL... that said, i'm currently hooked on SFA3 for mame, and i'm using logitech dual action nubtacular controllers... but there's no aiming for a shenpo-tiki-taki-kick-in-the-face

Fail, the ps2 dominated last gen and was close to 2x more expensive than the gc at times.
(yunus, Pitcairn)
Also, the dreamcast was MUCH cheaper than the ps2, had amazing/comparable graphics in relation to the ps2, and had a huge library. It still failed even though it was online close to day 1, was released more than a year earlier, and as I said was MUCH cheaper. Poor DC :<

i loved my DC and didn't purchase a ps2 til the dc was dead dead...
that being said i consider myself a hardcore gamer and frankly... i do not want a ps3 and there is nothing in the pipeline that will sway that decision. MGS4 might, if i wasn't so certain it will make its way to the 360 at a later date
and for the record i literally bought a wii this morning

.....
....and these numbers are the exact opposite (cheap consoles beating spendy ones)...so, does that make the Wii 3.5x better than the PS3?

Price has a lot to do with it, but so does marketing. I remember that when the Dreamcast was out most of my non-gaming friends didn't know what the Dreamcast was. Most would ask if I was playing on my playstation.
This time around almost everyone has heard of the Wii. I remember around Christmas time even my parents asked if I had gotten a Wii yet. The Wii is going to do well because it has both name recognition among the general public and an affordable price tag. If the Dreamcast had been marketed more to the general public it might have done better.
BTW, I still play my Dreamcast to this day. It is one of my all time favorite consoles.

I'm just saying that price might be a factor, but its not the only factor. Just saying that because the wii is the cheapest, it doesn't mean it's selling well only because of the price.
(onur, Netherlands Antilles)
I had a long statement and post prepared in respects of what happened with the dreamcast and why the PS3 is failing but then i think it is pretty obivous why the PS2 was so succesful so I won't waste anyones time.
pretty much I was going to make a point that times change. The situation when the PS2 came out is clearly different then the situation is now.

Then we have the same point :)
Gamers buy the systems they want and the majority of the buying public that knows little or nothing about gaming (Mom & Pop) buy according to price.
Then again, it could all be a huge coincidence that they are selling according to price $249 - $399 - $599. I guess the only REAL way to test my theory would be for Sony to drop the price of the PS3 to $229 and see what happens :D
(aybike, Kazakhstan)
I'm one of the weird people that buy consoles at around the end of it's life. So I bought a PS2 Slim.. which funnily enough games are still being released for, and is selling better than it's successor. Hah.
