How good is eBay? ( 4 Views )

no kitty!
  1. I am curious of how good eBay is as a part-time business. It seems ultra-competitive, yet I've heard of people making good margins. What products can you get fairly easily and sell one eBay? It seems like everyone is trying to sell similar products, maybe due to the infamous "wholesale directory".

    Opinoins...

  2. If you have the extra money to invest and expertise in the field I'd say go for it. Make sure you research and see how much smaller lots are going for. Calculate your risk vs. profit.

  3. I was thinking about mainly new game used/autographed baseball cards. I could buy lots from ebay... here is an example http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=20882

Note: I was hoping there would be some margin gains by buying larger lots and selling off individual cards, I don't know if this is true.

  4. I've sold cards. It just depends on what brand and sport you are selling (Baseball, Football, Tops, Upperdeck, etc) , are you selling vintage or new? If new many do what you are doing any margins are pretty low. How big of a lot do you have access to?

  5. Thanks everyone. Specifically I was thinking that it might be possible to buy large lots of baseball cards and break then up and make money. Kind of like buying wholesale and selling retail. Does anyone have any experience w/ cards?

  6. Yeah that must get the neighbors talking :D

Anyways, I definitely agree with what Wild Boar said... research is incredibly important. A good place to start is the "HOT ITEM" directory. Every week or so ebay releases a list of items that are hot sellers. http://forums.ebay.com/db2/thread.js...me=CMDV:IC1110

    Good luck

LOL That's AWSOME! 18 wheelers pulling up to your house..

Anyways- if you have a quality, and wanted product, your sure to sell.. I sold some parts off of my car that I didn't want and got 100 buxs that week.. I pair of turn signal lights.. some fog lights.. just a bunch of crap!

The main key is ---> RESEARCH!

  8. Ebay is very very hard work. I've sold on ebay 5 years and there has been both ups and downs. Just to worn you, this month has been very bad for many many sellers.

A word of advice, find a niche that you have a passion for. You'll get burnt out and/or discouraged if you don't love what you are doing and enjoying what you sell.

  10. it probabely also depends on what you want to sell.

  11. Back in the day I believed it was how to make an incedible small fortune with great ease. Now there are so many people, youy will just be anotehr person to jump on the bandwagon, however I still believe you can still make money on ebay.

The above are mearly oppinions hopefully fueling discussion.

  12. When I was 15-16 I was doing some miscellaneous work for different people I knew (i.e. unloading trucks of gravel for a friend who's a mason, helping people we knew move, cleaning offices w/my dad, etc.) and I 'invested' some of my money in musical instruments and equipment (specifically guitars and related items).

I'd go to Pawn Shops in my area, find a good deal, haggle with the person behind the counter (always pay cash, you get a better deal) and get good deals on stuff. Then, I'd turn around and sell it on eBay. (I bought a guitar for $140 and made $220 on it one time, even after I kept it and played it for 6 months :) ) You have to have a good eye for things like that and even then, sometimes you make poor decisions and only get your money back, at best.

My dad has done pretty much the same thing with cameras. He found a very old camera at a junk store and bought it for $20, then researched to find out what it was. As it turned out, he sold it for over $200 on eBay. He's done that with lots of cameras and other stuff that he'd find at junk stores now and then...

My advice: If you're going to work eBay, do something you enjoy and know a lot about. You need to be an expert in what you're selling, and be able to make good purchasing decisions.
