app to view email before downloading ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. Any recommendations for a Windows XP spam app to see email on the pop3 server before downloading, so the user chooses to exclude downloading the spam?

I'm a Mac user, so I'm unfamiliar with the Windows software offerings, and wanting to assist my father's request for a solution when he's checking mail at a location where he's charged by bandwidth.

I have him checking with his ISP about server side spam filters.

  2. Well tbh i don't know any software that would do this....cause what you're trying to do would be an IMAP-access and not pop3...well, there is a way: if the isp/hoster allows you to access the pop-box via a webinterface login there and delete the ones you don't want right on the server...

  3. Thanks, I have him asking his isp about webmail.

  4. There are programs that will download just the subject line (and I suppose sender and receiver) of an email. I was looking at this program a while ago:

    http://poptray.sourceforge.net/index.php

It's really meant to be an email monitor, but it, or something similar, would do the trick if you don't have webmail - somewhat less of a hassle than webmail too.

  5. I'm using Mail Washer for a while, and I'm pretty satisfied...

  6. I've been using free PopTray for years. It does exactly what you want to do. You preview POP messages in text-only mode, to protect you from Web-bugs. There are also free plug-ins that enable PopTray to access IMAP and Hotmail accounts, but I haven't tried those.

The newest version of PopTray also allows you to set up a blacklist, a whitelist, and rules that apply to the headers and/or body of messages. Spam messages can be marked as spam, or can be automatically or manually deleted from the mail server.

When I receive a spam message, I preview it in PopTray, copy the domain name from the Web site hyperlink in the body of the message, and paste it into a new "Body" rule, thus making sure that any future messages that contain that domain name in the body will be automatically deleted from the server, without me even having to see or download them.

PopTray saves me hours of spam processing every week. It's free, it's fast, it's small, and its author's Web site has active support forums.

My only relationship to PopTray is that I'm a satisfied user and that I correspond with the author on occassion, to try to help him find/fix bugs.
