7950 GT a neato card? ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. how well does the 7950 GT with 512 mb of ram run compared to a 7800 gtx with 256 mb of ram?

Also how hot does the 7950 GT get? My 7800 gtx from bfg got really hot to the point of about 100 Degrees C.

  2. It's a bit faster than the GTX card... But I dont think it's worth the upgrade, unless you're "that" close to getting smooth playback in some unknown resolution.

If you have a 7800 GTX 256 (which is also the card I own), I don't think it makes much sense to upgrade it this close to the probable launch of a DX10 card.
You would notice the difference in games (or other apps) that do take advantage of the extra 256 MBs of video RAM, but not that much to justify the upgrade. Right now, and coming from a great card that the 7800 GTX 256 is, the only card I think justifies an upgrade, is the 7950 GX2.

Unless of course, you have an excellent deal for the 7950 GT and have an eye for features such as HDCP (and can't afford a GX2)...Then I say, go for it!

  4. I'm in the same position here. One of my BFG 7800GTX cards died a little while back, so I have been running 1 of them for some time now. The extra memory and clock speeds on the 7950GT's looks like it would be a nice upgrade from a single 7800GTX, but it "more" than likely wouldn't be a worthwhile upgrade. I would probably be kicking myself for spending $300 when, as mentioned already, the DX10 and newer cards should be somewhere around the corner. *holding credit card in hand and The Egg cart all setup*

  5. the 7800GTX core is a great card. I have GO Version in my XPS Notebook and it has no issues with games today. the 7800GTX still has 24 pipes and 16 rops, so you are pretty well set. Hold tight till next gen Direct X10 cards, or for those to make current cards cheaper.

  6. I agree with most. There really is no need to upgrade until the new series of video cards come out in your case. The only reason I can think of that would make sence is if you wanted to switch to a passivly cooled video card (XFX version of the 7950GT is passive, and cool looking). But other then that, I would hold off.

  7. think im going to get a 7950 gt because my 7800 gtx card is about to fry with games like company of heroes and fear the card reads at about 100 degrees so i know its on its last leg to frying.

  8. Why not try...checking the cooling system??

  9. yeah go get a arctic cooler for your card , it works wonders... my 7800gt stays nice and cool , and the cooler really shines when you overclock :).

  10. I like passive cooling and im afraid of messing up the card if i change the cooling process with a new vga cooler.

I just dont trust myself with taking off the passive cooler and putting a new one on. And i dont want to void the warranty either.

Anyways has anyone tried out the new evga 7950 GT KO? Is the thing a frying pan?

I know ill get some nice performance with it regardless of heat just dont want it to fry on me while playing CoH.

Try removing your card and cleaning the dust out of the heatsink. There should be no reason any card should get that hot with proper cooling.

My 7950 GT KO idles at about 44*C in a room with an ambient temp of about 74*F.

Under load it hits around 65*C. Not too bad.
