Scythe Ninja, Infinity or Thermalright SI-128? ( 3 Views )
-
I'm looking for the best HSF. I'm looking for the lowest noise, very good cooling and not too difficult installation. I think that infinity is too big. SO which one is better Ninja or SI-128? Ninja is already with fan so if passive won't be enought I could also use it. What about SI-128. WHat quite fan would you recommend for it or it's still better to get Ninja?
(ibrahim , Cambodia)
If you have a side intake fan then definitely get the SI-128. I recommend the Aerocool Extreme turbine 120mm fan....I fully expected to use a spare Zalman fanmate to slow it down but I found that the noise is acceptable running full speed. I don't know if the 89cfm is accurate but it does move a good deal of air and the 16 fan blades seem to give it good pressure which the SI-128 needs. My X2 4400+ @2.5 idles @33-35c on a warm day.

the SI-128 and Scythe Ninja would be my vote. However, i have heard that the Ninja is discontinued :( :tear: so you will need to probably get the SI-128
(hikmet, Uzbekistan)
scythe infinity, its the best :D
(Ilknur, Australia)
Ninja is IMO best $/performance.

Cant argue I own one.

The Infinity is the best cooler out there, however if you're set against it then the SI-128 will give extremely similar results. Take note that you'll need a high-CFM fan for it though, since the closely-packed fin design needs a lot of airflow to be most effective. Something that pushes 70-80CFM would be ideal.

Ok, so what fan would you recommend that is strong enough and quite? Papst?

The Tuniq Tower 120 is the best air cooler. Out of the 3, I would definitely pick the Infinity.

SI-128 all the way. With the SI-128 the air is directed at the motherboard. I have one and found that my NB, ram, and mosfets all run much cooler with the extra air flow. My case also has a side vent so the fan draws cool air directly from the outside of the case.
(berna, Seychelles)
I don't have side fan only at the top front and back of the case. Will SI-128 be still good for it? Also question is what fan for it be the best and the the most quiet. Also how the mounting looks for SI-128. Is it better and easier than Ninja?
(ATILA, Namibia)
Since you mentioned you want the lowest noise, the Ninja will be your best bet. The widely spaced fins means that you can use a quiet low airflow fan and still get very good cooling. The SI-128, Infinity and Tuniq Tower are all great coolers, but decidedly less so when used in low airflow setups.
You could consider the new TR Ultra-120 too tho, that one looks to be excellent. ;)
(mahsun , Mozambique)
120- ultra you're saying? Now I got real mess in my head :). So what aboyt 120-Ultra plus Scythe S-flex 1600rpm or 1200 will be enough? 1600 is 63.7CFM and 1200 is 49 CFM.

Yes, it will still perform well but the side intake plus this cooler is the ultimate solution. Mounting it is probably easier than the ninja but it is still better to do it with the motherboard outside the case. If you have a removeable mobo tray it is fairly simple operation. The Ultra 120 will give you a degree or 2 better performance since you don't have a side intake but you might want to make sure you have clearance for it. (no narrow cases)

Another vote for the Scythe Infinity. I recently installed it with a Pentium D 945 and at 100% load I get around 44c. It's very quiet too. Once I get better ram I'll be really putting it to the test but as of right now I am a bliever of the Scythe Infitnity. I got mine from here.

My vote goes to the ninja. I can't hear the fan inside my Antec P-180 case and it cools amazingly well.

That's because it's Silent PC Review. The Infinity needs more airflow than the Ninja to be really effective, and at those airflow levels it's not as silent as the Ninja. The Infinity is the better cooler for top performance, the Ninja is better as a silent cooler.

Well, the test was done with the included fan so I think it's a good reference. Here is another review:

Once again, it is basically in-line with the Ninja, yet it costs ~$20 more.
(tuğba, Eritrea)
but the thing I might like more about infinity is it's mounting systyem. i don't need to put any backplate and so.
(ekim, Nicaragua)
I think I will decide to get Infinity becasue of nice mounting system that doesn't require backplate.

sweet, post pics of it in the heatsink thread wen you it comes in ;)

I will for sure. Around 12th of October I should have it.

I'm not missing the point, I understand perfectly. What I think you're missing is you have to pay ~$65 for the Infinity, plus another ~$20 for a high output 120x25mm fan, when you could just get the Ninja for $40 and have it out-perform the Infinity at stock.
(ali, Wallis and Futuna)
another vote for the Infinity! best cooler out there for the $$$ ;)

the reason the infinity costs $50+ is that its the best air cooler on the market, even on par with the tuniq tower which the ninja performs worse then and lets not forget the ninja is impossible to find in stock anywhere
(Emin, Switzerland)
I'm using a Scythe Infinity on a E6700 (stock) in the system listed in my sig. I just built this last week and designed it for silence (and succeeded, it's basically inaudible)
My idle temps are now:
via CoreTemp:
32C CPU
via Asus PC Probe II:
19C CPU
33C MB
Note that these temps are the results after modding the Infinity's retention system with a better one, as well as re-installing the MBs heatsinks with AS5 and removing the gold cover flaps. Previously CPU temps were about 8C higher, and MB temps were about 9C.

So what did you do precisely?
(**SİBEL**, Kenya)
I can't take credit for it, freecableguy over on the xtremesystems forums "invented" it so to speak. Basically you need to goto your local hardware store, lowes, home depot, etc and buy:
(4) 6-32 Machine Screws about 1 1/2" long
(4) 1/4" rubber washers
(4) 6-32 Knurled screw nuts
1. Remove all four plastic retention mounts from the Infinity.
2. Place washers onto the screws so that they rest against the screw head
3. Apply thermal paste to CPU
4. Insert the machine screws through the 775 socket holes so that the screw head is under the mobo and the screw itself is pointing up through the MB
5. Place the Infinity down onto the CPU, making sure the 4 screws pointing up go through the Infinity's metal retention holes.
6. In an X-pattern, slowly tighten the knurled screw nuts onto the screws. Remember to tighten just a little bit at a time in an X pattern.
This should prove to be a more robust mounting scheme for the heavy Infinity, as well as providing better contact btw the CPU and the heatsink. Previously I noticed that with the stock retention system, the weight would drag the Infinity down a tiny, tiny bit resulting in less than optimal contact.
(şükriye , Argentina)
and finall question: will infinity fit into Asus P5W DH Deluxe?
(mehmet, Monaco)
I haven't heard of any mounting issues with the Infinity, aside from case-related ones.

NINJA PLUS Rev.B
Scythe now has a new Ninja Plus Rev. B on their home page. I was all set on getting the Infinity but I was bit concerned about the size and weight. Now I'm considering holding off until the new Ninja ships in early Oct.
(enes, Peru)
DAMN!!! And I just got Infinity :(

You shouldn't be unhappy. The Infinity cools my C2D6.4K @ 3.4GHZ to 45C under full load....the new ninja can't be that much better ;)

Here is the rating: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article30-page1.html
Thermalright Ultra 120 is the king but with noice
Ninja is the hero with silence.
in conclusion, if you want the best performance and don't care much about noice, go with Ultra 120. If you want best performance and noice ratio, go with Ninja.
(cd, Uruguay)
Nobody really knows which is best.
Only 2 reviews I read on the infinity say that the Ninja is better.
About 7 other reviews say the infinity is better.
There is only 1 review with the Ultra 120 where it is tested against REAL coolers like the Ninja and the Ultra "wins"
All other reviews with the Ultra 120 are done using AMD systems and the contenders are nohing to talk about, so not FAIR reviews IMO
There is also 1 review where the Ultra 120 is compered against the Tuniq Tower 120 previous results and the conclusion is rather lame since the tower 120 was tested with an ambient temperature of 5c less when compared to the testing done with the Ultra 120
