Servers & Unix ( 3 Views )

no kitty!
  1. So I'm pretty bored with just playing video games all the time(WoW is sucking away my soul) so I'd like to do something a bit more meaningful with my computer time. Is there a good place to start if I'd like to start setting up my own server? I'd also like to get a computer running Unix at some point to fiddle around with.

    Thoughts?

  2. Check out gentoo. Its a build from scratch linux distro.

  4. I've used Gentoo for years - its a great way to learn the nuts and bolts of Linux.

I use Ubuntu on my laptops just because I don't have the time to fiddle with configuration files these days.

Using VMWare server/player is a great way to play around with different options until you find something that fits your style.

I'm just completing moving all of my mail, web, and database servers over to Xen so I can run multiple instances of Gentoo without the vmware performance hit.

I used this to get started:

    ubuntu xen guide

and then downloaded some prebuilt gentoo images.

With the live migration features of xen I don't think I'll ever have to shutdown a server again. (Can't seem to get more than two years out of one before the racks get re-arranged).

  5. I've found it is nearly impossible to learn to use operating systems or various softwares unless you have a specifc goal in mind, in which the software is a tool used to complete the task. That is especially true with unix softwares, they are designed as tools for specific tasks. Just playing around won't teach you anything unless you have an end goal in mind.

  6. gentoo is probably the easiest way to discourage someone from using linux. ;) If you just want to start using *nix, get a simple distro and work your way up (i.e. ubuntu).

what type of server are you looking at running?
