e6400 on P5B deluxe wifi - OC advice? ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. Hi,

    My system is:
    P5B deluxe wifi-ap
    e6400 L625A331
    OCZ Platinum Dual PC2-6400 ddr2-800
    Zalman cnps9500 LED

I have a couple of questions. My first attempts at overclocking failed miserably on this system. I never found an fsb increase that was stable, anything up to 360 would crash loading windows and anything around 400 would not even post (a couple of times I had to remove the battery and jumper). I've done a lot of reading but...

One thing I noticed, is cpu-z shows the 'timings table' for my ram at 5,5,5,15 whereas the OCZ web site says that this ram (pn# OCZ2P8001G) should have timings of 4,5,4,15. Should I override the spd table in bios?

I've been carefull to always keep the ram near 1:1 or below, but what about ram voltage - again the ocz web says 2.1 - 2.2.

My stock temps btw are 44c under load.

    TIA

So should I force these settings in bios?

  2. :"I've been carefull to always keep the ram near 1:1 "

if this is a true statement then thats your problem. remember whatever you set your FSB to is DOUBLED when sent to the ram.

so set your ram multiplier to 2:1 and loosen the timings to 5 5 5 12 by manually setting it in the bios to that and then start upping your FSB until the cpu either starts getting too hot or wont load windows. Then go back and tighten up your ram timings.

cpu-z has issues reporting the proper ram timings in some situations but more likely the spd table contains timings for speeds in excess of the rated clock speed and is detecting your masive memory overclock and is trying to set looser timings so it will operate.

Your goal is to set the memory loose, 5 5 5 12 or 5 5 5 18 and max out the cpu. then go back and tweak your memory. It has been proven that in these boards the small loss of memory performance due to loose timings it more than made up by increased CPU speed.

  3. Thanks for the info - but I need to explain myself better!

In the P5B bios, stock cpu frequency is 266 and the memory speed will be listed as "ddr2-800". The other memory settings will be 533,667,800,889,1067/

As you change the cpu freq. The memory speeds listed above increment. At a certain cpu freq. The memory speed that was 667 will have increased to 800 - so then I will select that, (which I thought meant I was never overclocking my ram - or underclocking it when the cpu feq. increase meant that 667 read 750 or something) when I said I've kept it at 1:1 that's what I meant.

This mobo is different it terms of not just showing a ratio like on my amd board - ie. 1:1 or 5:4 like I use on my x2 chip.

Thanks for explainig about the timing strategy - I'll try that later. Overclocking this board is making me nervous a little as once it wouldn't recover by just disconnecting the ac and I had to pull the battery and jumper (which means removing the video card - nice ergonomics here - my MSI board has a push button to clear rtc)
