Is the 20WMGX2 worth the extra price for my uses? ( 2 Views )

no kitty!
  1. Hey all,

Apparently, my computer received a bit too much electricty in a recent storm that past through. Sadly, it took out everything...including my monitor. Therefore I need to buy a new one.

In order to explain how I use my computer, let me give a little bit of background info. My (fried) computer is ridiculously old. 5 years ago, I built it to be the ultimate gaming machine since I played games all the time. The previous 3 years, I backed off the games for two reasons: 1) I moved to Penn State and the night life there kept me way too busy for games and 2) my computer really couldn't handle any of the new games. I moved away from Penn State about 1 month ago. I still haven't picked up gaming again, but I figured I'd build my new computer with gaming in mind (besides, even if I never use it for games, a gaming rig kicks ass in pretty much every other category anyway).

So, with all of that said, I'm debating between two monitors: the NEC 20WMGX2 and the LG L203WT. Is the 20WMGX2 worth the extra $260? Will I notice the 2ms difference in response time? the 200:1 difference in contrast ratio? the 170 cd/m2 difference in brightness?

I honestly don't know much about monitors. I know enough to hold a conversation, but that's about it.

Also, I did search the forums for these topics. While the search turned up a ton of results, none of them seemed to address these issues. My apologies, though, if I missed a post that answers my questions.

Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much in advance!

    Kurt

  2. You pay for what you get with the NEC.

It's an awesome monitor and if you watch HD content or plan on watching HD content via your computer that is the way to go.

  3. Deciding if it's worth the extra depends on the funds available to you. If you're budgeting 5K for a computer+monitor, it's most likely a definite yes. If you're budgeting 1.5k for a computer+monitor, and you don't plan on using it to watch media and/or play console games it's probably not.

  4. Honestly, I'm budgeting in between those amounts. I'm thinking about 2-3k. Since I do plan on watching HD content, I think I have my answer. I think I'll grab the 20WMGX2. Although, I do have one more question. Are those differences THAT noticable? Again, keep mind that I know nothing about monitors. So if it's obvious that those specs should make a HUGE difference, don't flame me. :p

  5. i just read in another post that nec has a 22 and 24" flavor of the WMGX2 coming out...albiet in April 07. I am in the same boat as you (well, with the NEC and some other lcds...) im holding out a little longer i think.

I'd wait it out and get something cheapy to see what the next few months bring.

Honestly, I've got a cheapo CRT I'm using right now to hold me off. I built a crap temporary computer out of spare parts I had lying around (which is how I'm typing this to you). There are two main reasons I'd consider NOT waiting: 1) I always play the waiting game. Just as something comes out that I'm ready to buy, I hear about a new uber cool product coming out which makes me want to wait longer. Then I never end up buying anything. and 2) the price on this monitor is about the max I want to spend right now for just a monitor. The 22" and 24" will probably be out of my price range (unless you know something I don't).

i havent heard about the prices. Search the board in the this forum for the 2690 thread.

travbomb gives some specs and says that it wont be crazy overpriced, but along the lines of like how the 20wmgx2 is a bit more than the competition.

my thing is i just REALLY want a 24" lcd and everything out there either sucks (2407) , theres conflicting stories (244t), or not out yet (FP241W)

  8. yea, i think it would be worth the extra cash. I have one and it is awesome. Not the ultimate, but very good.

Given in isolation each one of those specifications is probably not worth it, but together I think it is worth the extra cash.

Just out of curiousity, what makes you "REALLY" want a 24"? Is there a specific reason other than it being bigger? I'm just wondering since I've always had an old 17" CRT. The 20" for me is already an upgrade. But if there is something I'm not considering, then I'd like to know.

  10. i have a 21" crt now. I wanted something 'bigger' on my desk. Something with a large screen, higher resolution to do web/design work and be able to fit alot on my screen.

24" screens can do 1080 resolution so i would be able to see things in HD as well.

just the size i wanted, actually. nothing CRUCIAL to having that size screen.

  11. You can see things just as well in HD with a 20" 1680 x 1050 as a 24" 1920 x 1080.
The 20" just shrinks to fit but plays just as nice and maybe a little better because it's glossy.
I do not know of any 24" with glossy that does 1920 x 1080.

I do like my 24" better sometimes b/c of the real estate. And watching the Dolphins Steelers game last night in HD on it made my $700 purchase for my 2405 well worth it. I will have to go back and play the game on my 20" Asus PW201 and let you guys know later how I feel about it.

I might even post a pic later tonight with both monitors playing the game and let you decide.

  12. It is the best monitor I have ever seen. It was totally worth the premium. Once you go NEC you never go back.

\nice. i had to watch the game in just digital. ugh.

i was thinkin of getting a 2405 instead of a 2407 or the 20wmgx2. then i just read that the samsung 244t apparently doesnt have any more input lag. so maybe that is a GO

immersion. I sold my 2405 for my NEC 20WMGX2. The image quality of the NEC was better, hands down. But the over all immersion during gaming was much better with the Dell.

Overall experience? I think it was a wash, with an edge given to the 24inch screen. I sold the Dell because I purchased a three year warranty with the NEC. I play games to have fun and escape for a few minutes a week. Anything that allows an overall better experience has to be taken into account, more than just specs alone.

  15. this monitor is worth the extra.

the brightness on this thing is awsome as well as the shapness of the picture. anything that has to pixal scale though pretty much sucks, you have to run at native res to get the most out of this monitor.

it also likes medium bright rooms over dark or exsesivly bright ones. in a really darkned room the brightness kills the black level and makes it washout with light. in an over bright the reflections off of the screen become a distaction.

the speaker bar isnt that great either. but it is a ton better than anyother tft ive seen with built in sound. and it is removable too (the first thing i did was remove it)

the tv and hd conections are a great addition but the pixal scaling the happens to lower resolutions makes the picture wishy washy. there is also a picture in picture option that lets you watch another source while being on the computer. so if you want to watch t.v and do some web surfing at the same time you can.

pic: (flash killed the brightness of the screen though)

if you want i can post some in game screen s later

  16. This has probably already been stated (didn't read all replies) but there is more than just response time difference between the 2 monitors you listed. The NEC has an 8-bit AS-IPS panel versus the 6-bit TN on the LG. What this means is that the NEC will give you better saturated colors and slightly better black levels. For me..those 2 monitors aren't even in the same class..I considered the NEC but ended up going with the Acer Ferrari F-20 (8ms S-IPS panel) for over $200 less and I'm happy with my decision.

  18. How are you viewing HD content on your Dell? Is the Dell HDCP?

I have HD Tuners on both PC's. One's a MyHDTV. The other is a Fushion USB Gold.
The Fushion was a little more flexible in terms of scalable size. I can configure it to display full screen on a 1680 x 1050 20" panel vs the MyHD only has standard viewing sizes 1080i and 720i.
